Poetry Drop – Black Rook in Rainy Weather by Sylvia Plath

Poetry Drop

Honestly, this might sound strange but this is the kind of day I wish I could have.  A dreary, wet, rainy, gray day.  The sunshine is starting to get on my nerves.  Not to mention, the 100 degree heat.  I love this poem, it’s one of my all-time favorites.

Black Rook in Rainy Weather

On the stiff twig up there
Hunches a wet black rook
Arranging and rearranging its feathers in the rain-
I do not expect a miracle
Or an accident
To set the sight on fire
In my eye, nor seek
Any more in the desultory weather some design,
But let spotted leaves fall as they fall
Without ceremony, or portent.
Although, I admit, I desire,
Occasionally, some backtalk
From the mute sky, I can’t honestly complain:
A certain minor light may still
Lean incandescent
Out of kitchen table or chair
As if a celestial burning took
Possession of the most obtuse objects now and then —
Thus hallowing an interval
Otherwise inconsequent
By bestowing largesse, honor
One might say love. At any rate, I now walk
Wary (for it could happen
Even in this dull, ruinous landscape); sceptical
Yet politic, ignorant
Of whatever angel any choose to flare
Suddenly at my elbow. I only know that a rook
Ordering its black feathers can so shine
As to seize my senses, haul
My eyelids up, and grant
A brief respite from fear
Of total neutrality. With luck,
Trekking stubborn through this season
Of fatigue, I shall
Patch together a content
Of sorts. Miracles occur.
If you care to call those spasmodic
Tricks of radiance
Miracles. The wait’s begun again,
The long wait for the angel,
For that rare, random descent.

  1. Beautiful!

    We’re lucky today—it’s raining.

  2. I’ve never read that Plath poem …

I want rain, too! A cold, wet rainy day would be perfect, especially on a weekend so I could just stay home and not have to do anything! (except maybe read)

  3. Isn’t it pretty? I mean its terribly depressing, but the language is so lovely.

Yes, we need a GRAY DAY here in the burbs.

  4. She really is one of the best in terms of use of language….

  5. very interesting, but I don’t agree with you

  8. This diet program program must be followed for a period of 7 days, and surprisingly one particular can shed as
a lot as 10 pounds in a week. The eating plan also assists to regulate insulin
levels, which is also very good for diabetics.

Most fad diets suggest a dramatic lower in calorie intake to
realize weight loss. Many individuals typically do not stick to
the suggested fad eating plan. You have this body that craves a host of nutrients, although some cravings that it appears to
have are skewed by years of feeding it a lot of the incorrect
points. As most of us know, consuming slowly, and savoring the taste of food, is significant to
weight loss.Although a low-calorie diet regime, it definitely does not starve your body and you won’t knowledge any dip in power levels. If it does, what is the common speed of a great swift low carb diet that will not just give one particular temporary fat loss effects? To satiate thirst, a single can also drink cranberry juice and unsweetened tea through the diet. You can quickly generate meal plans with small guess work and you can delight in your food extra than on other diets so you will likely stick to the plan for as extended as you need.Instead, switching more than to a diet that is nutritious but low in calories as effectively as enjoyable can supply sustained weight loss.So the equation is to burn off higher number of calories than you are taking in.
